Update on Mom

It has been a roller coaster ride, to say the least...juggling meds and doses to try to keep her out of a-fib (irregular heart rhythm), trying to keep her kidneys working and swelling down, trying to build up her stamina so her tolerance of activity improves and shortness of breath resolves. She is now in Cardiac Rehab. She has had good and bad days, but I think we finally got that tweeked to her level. Her main goals are to be able to drive again, go to church and the store and out to eat and play cards with her friends, and walk with a steady gait. Her spirits are good and she is moving forward since she began Cardiac Rehab. She is still in a-fib, but not symptomatic, and heart rate is under control, so she refused Cardioversion and the cardiologist was ok with that. They have to be careful how much they increase her dosage of her cardiac meds because if they succeed in getting her completely out of a-fib, she becomes very bradycardic (extremely low heart rate, i.e. 40's). I see her 3-4 times a week and Toby sees her on her days off. Her wound finally healed!!! She is off the walker and is using a quad cane. Phyllis is coming next Wednesday to stay with her while Toby and Jerry and John and I are in Florida. I know she'll enjoy that. Will try to keep you more up to date. Mom Home From Regency Place

Here is a shot of Mom home from Regency Place Rehab Center. Note her Rolator walker. Pretty fancy, huh?? The rate she is going in PT and OT, she probably won't need it too much longer.

I stayed with her the first 8 days home, now Phyllis is with her for a week. The nurse comes 3 times a week, PT and OT 3 times a week for first week or so.

She still has an open wound from her graft site that we are debriding and redressing
every day.

We are monitoring her heart rate (which has been extremely low (40's and 50's) and making adjustments to her heart and blood pressure meds as we keep in touch with the Cardiologist's office. We are also monitoring her weight on a daily basis because of the high dose of Lasix (water pill) she was on. We've got it down to 40 mg from 160 mg daily, and we've cut back on her Potassium as we have decreased her Lasix. We are in frequent contact with the Nephrologist in this regard. Phyllis is reporting vital signs and weight every day, so I can monitor it and get in touch with the doctors as needed.

She is doing more every day. This photo was taken on one of the two days in 6 weeks where she stayed in pj's and robe due to overdoing it the previous two days with Dr. visit, discharge home, and Christmas.

Ivory is beginning to look better nourished now that she comes once or twice a day for meals. She is also feeling comfortable enough to stick around, sometimes all day and evening...grooming, napping, doing her business, etc. Just today, she finally let me pet her...a break-through.

Here is Cheddar, at our back door, meowing for his supper. He has made a complete turnaround from being a skittish, run- when- he- saw- or- heard- us, kitty to an affectionate guy that loves to be petted and jumps up onto our laps for snuggling, kneading, petting, grooming.

Right now, he and Tux are getting to know each other through the front and back doors. Sometimes, they just sit and stare at each other...other times Cheddar growls and hisses at Tux, who backs down...then Tux's tail rapidly thrashes back and forth. They definitely are not ready to be together.

About a week after we started feeding Ivory, we saw this orange tabby in the yard, then feeding at our feeding station. He, too, looks undernourished. We named him Cheddar, and he has been a "regular" from then on. He, also, is standoffish, but appears to have been around people some, because he does not run off. We can watch him feed too.

Ivory started coming around recently and last week I got a closer look and saw that (s)he was very skinny. I immediately decided to feed him/her. She ate everything we left out for her--moist and dry food--that first night and came back in the morning for more. (S)he has been coming a.m. and p.m. every day all week. We can sit out on the patio and watch her eat, and she occasionally looks up at us (with the most beautiful blue eyes). Apparently, she has been around humans and is not a feral cat. Eventually, we hope (s)he'll warm up to us. We are going to try to find a place where we canhave Ivory spayed/neutered. Maybe she can be our outdoor cat. Not sure how Tux would take to having another cat in "his" house.

Home At Long Last and Doing Great

Baby Caroline came home after 12 days in NICU at All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida. I flew down ahead of our original schedule of April 29th, to be with Jeff for moral support since Heather was still in the hospital til Saturday. Caroline made daily progress and was weaned off the ventillator, then the oxygen, then the IV hyperal (nutrition) and began to breast feed before discharge. Her resp. lungs matured after a dose of surfactant; and her patent ductus closed after a prostglandin inhibitor was administer by IV drip over several days.

John came down on the 29th, as originally planned, and we stayed with Jeff and Heather for a few days til they were able to get some rest and get into a routine with Baby Caroline. She is adorable. Will share more pictures when I get home from Florida.

Currently, John has returned to Indy after 2 weeks' stay, and I'm here at Julie's for a week and then for a week at David's--but on call 24/7 in case Jeff and Heather need help in any way.

Needless to say, I am enjoying my visit with the kids and grandkids. This was my first Mother's Day with all three kids in 14 years. It was great.

Update on Baby Caroline

Caroline continues to have respiratory distress, so they are transferring her to All Childrens' Hospital in St. Petersburg to be put on a ventillator to help with her breathing--so she can rest after working so hard to breathe. Jeff is going up with her and Heather's mom will stay with Heather at the hospital. Heather is supposed to be discharged tomorrow and plans to go on up with Jeff to be with Caroline. They are hoping to get a room in the Ronald McDonald House so they won't have to commute the 40 minutes each way every day--too rough on Heather. Keep all of them in your prayers. They anticipate a week's hospitalization. She does not have pneumonia nor amniotic fluid in her lungs, as was originally believed. They feel her lungs are still immature, due to the fact that she was delivered early (possibly 2 weeks prior to due date).

Baby Caroline is Here at Last

Jeff just called to say that Baby Caroline was born by C-section (due to breach presentation). She weighed in at 7lbs. 8 oz. and is 19 1/2 inches long. She has a little dark hair and has Jeff's nose (turned up). She is healthy and whole and Heather is doing well in Recovery. Jeff said Caroline cried the minute she was delivered. Once we receive pictures, I'll post one on this blog with an update on how everything is going. We are so excited. We will be leaving next Tues. for Florida...I'll be there one month, and John for two weeks. Can't wait to see her. Needless to say,

Back from Sunny, Warm Florida

Mom and I returned from Florida Tuesday...from 70's to 30's in two hours. What a shock to our systems. We had a great visit with kids and grandkids, got plenty of exercise, went to the beach, celebrated Michael's 17th birthday, stayed with each of the kids, saw dance classes, basketball game, jog-a-thon, had lunch with grandkids at school, etc., etc., etc.
I took 200+ photos on my digital camera. While we waited in the airport terminal, I thought I'd kill some time and delete the bad photos. Somewhere along the line, I accidentally deleted all of my photos...now I have nothing to show...and there was alot to see. Oh well, I won't do that again. Next time, I'll wait to delete after I've downloaded them onto my computer. Unfortunately, now I won't be able to burn cds to send to the kids and to show to friends and family. Live and learn.

A Little Too Much Excitement for Me...

Thursday, Mom's next-door neighbor and dear friend, Dorothy, called to say that Mom had fallen and cut her eyebrow and would probably need stitches. John and I immediately went over to see how Mom was. She had passed out and her glasses had cut her below her right brow. We took her to the hospital, anticipating a few stitches and maybe a cat scan to make sure she had no fractures...but lo and behold...when they took her vital signs in the triage room, her heart rate was 188!! Not good. They immediately took her back and placed her on a monitor, got the doctor in the room and started an IV so they could administer a drug to bring her heart rate down and restore her to a normal sinus rhythm. They were successful. Then she developed another abnormal rhythm. So they gave her another IV med by slow drip to regulate her heart rhythm. They admitted her to the PCU. She spent the night and then on Friday, she had an echocardiagram and a couple stress tests (not exercise induced, but drug induced). The cardialogist said her tests came out fine and that she could be discharged home on the new med to keep her from having these abnormal rhythms again. She is bruised around her eye and her cheek is swollen and bruised. She had 3 stitches to her laceration. But she is glad to be back home and other than feeling pretty tired, she is ok. I told her to lay low for a few days and to get her strength back. She agreed to stay out of trouble.

Lucky and Tux--Friends at last

We took Tux with us over to Jean and Gregg's for a visit...his first outing other than to the Vets. When he first saw Lucky, he was really interested and wary. Then, as I carried him into the house, he hissed twice at Lucky (we never heard him hiss before!!). Once inside, as Lucky approached Tux, it was hillarious...Tux hunched his back--he looked like a Halloween Black Cat. After about 10 minutes, when he realized that Lucky was no threat, he became very comfortable around him. It was fun to watch.

A Trip Down Memory Lane

Saturday, Mom, Phyllis, Toby and I drove down to Shelbyville for a sentimental journey. We met with Jim Lieland (our cousin from Rushville) and enjoyed a lunch at Cracker Barrel and memory book ( that Jim compiled) and had a great visit with him.

After that, we drove by all the old familiar places and reminisced. We were able to meet the current owner of the house on Vine Street and he took us through it--he is in the process of rennovating it, hoping to restore it to how it was when we lived there.

We also visited with one of Mom's dear friends and caught up on family goings on.

News on Phyllis

Phyllis has three more radiation treatments left. They call them the "grand finale" because she'll get double doses. She is coming to Indiana August 29 til the 19th of September. Most of the time she'll be in Valparaiso visiting with Guy, Jill and the kids. But she plans on spending 5 days in Indy. It will be great to see her again. Her Radiation Oncologist told her she'll be extremely tired for two more months. Looks like her anitdepressant is starting to lift her spirits a bit. Keep praying.

MEET ""Tux"

We adopted the most precious 4 month old kitten from the Indianapolis Humane Society. He is up to date on his shots and has been neutered. This is the first pet John has ever had and he is having a ball with Tux...so am I. He is so loving, affectionate, playful, and "athletic" (per John). Another interesting tidbit--He has a microchip implanted that enables him to be tracked back to us should he get out of the house and someone finds him. The I.D. Number on his tag is registered with 24PetWatch and he would be scanned if brought to a vet or the Humane Society; or the 1-800 number on his tag can be called and we would be notified. How cool is that?

Mom called and said that Phyllis is planning on a trip to Indiana in September after her radiation treatments are over. We are all looking forward to having her here. She'll stay with Guy and Jill and little ones one week--she hasn't even gotten to see the new baby yet. Then she plans on staying with Mom the second week. Can't wait.

TOBY'S BACK

Toby spent a week out in Colorado with Phyllis and got back a week ago. She said it was the best visit she's had out there...weather was perfect...saw tons of deer...Phyllis was in good spirits and even laughing again...they worked in the backyard and got all the weeds pulled and mulched. They sewed curtains for the master bath and bedroom, which Phyllis has wanted to do for ever so long. ..she's had the fabric but hasn't been up to it. Sounds like her Nardil is kicking in. She is extremely tired from the radiation treatments. Three more weeks to go.

Toby and I are participating in a 10 year study of sisters of women with breast cancer--to determine what roles heredity, environment and lifestyle play in the chances of a woman getting breast cancer. There are 50,000 women from all races, ethnic, geographic backgrounds involved in this study. We are happy to do it, and hope one day it will help lead to a cure.

Rosebush from John's folks'

We transplanted this rosebush from John's folks' house before it was turned over to the buyer. It did not tolerate the shock of the transplant and all the leaves died. It was about 6 feet tall and had red roses. So, when I got back from Colorado, inspite of having used new soil and rose food, it was on its last leg. There were only a couple of canes that still had some green. So I pruned it back and cut off the dead canes. Look at the new growth now. Can't wait til next year, or maybe even this fall, for roses. It'll be a wonderful tribute to John's parents and a beautiful remembrance.

Phyllis' Current Status

She is still battling depression--none of the new meds she's tried have worked--so they are going to put her back on Nardil--the one that did work, but has so many restrictions regarding foods and meds. Keep her in your prayers.

She started Radiation last Thursday. She said it'll be a couple of weeks before she notices any fatigue from that. She drives down to the Springs every morning M-F for her Radiation Therapy.

Keep those prayers and cards of encouragement coming. They really help.

Good News for Phyllis

When we took her to see her oncologist, all her labs were back within normal range--so now she can go to church and be around lots of people without the worry that she may get sick.

Her surgeon said she got clean margins when she excised more breast tissue after her chemo was finished. Biopsies were negative.

Her Psychiatrist is trying a third medication for depression since they would like to keep her off the Nardil if at all possible because of the many interactions it has with so many foods and drugs.

So far, our prayers have been answered, But now we need to ask God to lift her depression, that her medication will work for her.

She starts radiation on July 11 and goes 5 days a week for 7 weeks. But she is through the worst.
